Review: Dannon Creamery Strawberry Cheesecake Dairy Dessert

I mentioned in my last Dannon Creamery review that these products just kind of sneakily appeared on the dairy case shelves of my local Meijer and since they were so sneaky, I decided to do a little additional research after completing my initial review.  Interestingly, this Creamery line is predicated on the fact that more than 70% of all yogurt is eaten before 4:00 p.m., so Dannon wanted to try to create a product that could be eaten after that and would be patterned more after a dessert and that led to the Creamery line of products that are dessert focused and made with bases of either Greek yogurt or pudding.  Anyway, working in marketing myself, I find that kind of market research that leads to product development to be quite fascinating.  So, after our little product development lesson, it's time to take a look at this 5.3 ounce container of Dannon Creamery Strawberry Cheesecake Dairy Dessert that I also picked up for $1.50.  The entire container is 180 calories and has eight grams of protein.

Okay, take a look at the picture above first and then read this product description from the Dannon website:  "A cheesecake inspired texture made with traditional Greek yogurt, topped with delicious fruit sauces, with less than 200 calories. Experience the sweet strawberry taste atop our perfectly creamy dessert."  Um, yeah...do you see anything that isn't quite right there?  That fruit sauce does not really look too delicious, does it?  Frankly, it looks kind of sad.  Either way, at least it smelled like strawberries, so it had that going for it.  Being that I've had one of these before, the cheesecake/Greek yogurt was about what I'd expected.

Like last time, I thought it was appropriate to try these separately.  Since I've already had the cheesecake/Greek yogurt before, I'll just regurgitate what I said then because it also applies here.  Basically, Dannon did a good job disguising that this was Greek yogurt because it did not have the same sour or tart taste that a lot of Greek yogurts have.  This was a reasonable and creamy approximation of the namesake cheesecake and I very much appreciated that.  As for the strawberry fruit sauce, it didn't taste nearly as sad as it looked, but it wasn't much better.  I guess that sounds insulting and I don't mean it to be.  The flavor was fine.  It was just sweet enough and did a decent job of emulating a fresh strawberry sauce.  My only complaint is that while there was flavor, it could have used some more punch.  When both parts were mixed together, the cheesecake took prevalence here as it was the primary flavor and the strawberry was just an accent flavor due to its weakness.

Buy It or Fly By It?  This did taste like strawberries and while I would have liked that flavor to be a little stronger, I can't particularly say that there was anything totally wrong with this.  It was a tasty enough flavor that I'll give it a BUY IT rating, but I will say that if you do pick this up, don't go into this expecting it to be the most wonderful thing that you've ever eaten.  It delivers what it promised at the bare minimum and in this case, I suppose that is just fine.

BUY IT!!

  1. In had one of these tonight and I thought it was horrible. The cheesecake wasn't very convincing and you would think a company like Dannon would use a better strawberry -- the one here had a very odd chemically flavor. I will definitely NOT buy this product again.

  3. I must say that this is the most dissapointing cheesecake dessert I've ever eaten. It tasted nothing of cheesecake and the strawberry and cherry topping taste like watered down strawberry/cherry jams. Maybe if it was called diet strawberry custard, then I would at least go in expecting that.

  4. Just had the strawberry, I didn't think it was cheesecake-like at all, I know Greek yogurt when I taste it. I don't care for Greek yogurt. But it was worth a try because I need something snacky at night besides chips and cookies! I sliced some strawberries on top of this and it wasn't bad. I will buy it again and hope to find the caramel cheesecake dessert!
