Review: Ben & Jerry's Candy Bar Pie Ice Cream

So, I like candy bars, I like pies and I like ice cream.  When I see something that combines all of those, it would seem like it would be the best of both worlds and something that I would absolutely pick up, right?  Well, on the other hand, I don't like my waist line expanding and as I mentioned in my last Ben & Jerry's review, I've been trying to stay away from their products recently in order to maintain a semi-healthy diet.  But, as I also mentioned in that review, every now and then I just can't resist when I see a sale combined with a coupon and that's what Kroger did to me and that led me to pick up this pint of limited batch Ben & Jerry's Candy Bar Pie Ice Cream on sale for $3.99 (plus a $1.00 off coupon).  This pint is the standard four half-cup servings and comes in a decidedly unhealthy 300 calories per serving.

I'll once again let Ben & Jerry's do the heavy lifting for me here:  "It’s the best of your all-time favorite candy bars – the best peanut buttery, fudge chunky, chocolate nougatty stuff – all together in one outrageously tasty creation, with sweet & salty pretzel swirls to make it even tastier. It's also a Limited Batch, so seize the flavor while you can."  After reading that, I can confirm that they did an excellent job with their description because all of those components were there in copious amounts.  This one also smelled faintly of peanut butter, so it was obvious that the peanut butter ice cream would be doing it's job, which is not surprising consider all the other times I've had their peanut butter ice cream.

I can describe the flavor in three words:  sweet, salty and decadent.  Every single component of the description above announced itself with authority in this pint.  The candy bar components brought the decadence as not only were they rich, flavorful and exactly as I hoped they would be, but they also added some gooeyness and crunchiness to this in the presence of the nougat and fudge chunks.  The peanut butter ice cream, while not overly potent as Ben & Jerry's peanut butter ice cream tends to be, added enough peanut butter flavor that there was no mistaking that it was there.  The pretzel swirls, while also bringing some gooeyness (I love that textural component in ice creams more and more with each passing day), also did a good job of bringing enough salty flavor to save this entire container from going over the edge and being too sweet in decadent.  Instead, that saltiness allowed this one to toe the line of being too much without crossing, which was wonderful.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Candy bars, pies and ice cream are all wonderful and so was this.  Manufacturer's often become a bit overzealous and use phrases in their product descriptions that don't quite fit the product, but in the case of this one, Ben & Jerry's usage of the phrase "outrageously tasty creation" was more than appropriate because this was flat-out awesome and very deserving of a BUY IT rating.  Honestly, it was tough for me to put my spoon down and not destroy this entire pint in one serving because it was so tasty and addicting.  If you see this in the store (it's a limited batch, so it might not be there long), I would strongly advise grabbing it unless you are putting yourself on serious dietary restrictions because if you do grab it, you are probably going to be a very happy person after eating it.  I know I was.

BUY IT!!
