Review: KIND Strong & Kind Honey Mustard Almond Protein Bar

Generally, I like KIND bars and have shown in that in my numerous reviews.  On a recent trip to Kroger, I noticed they had introduced a new line of bars that seemed like they were focusing on savory types of ingredients and while intrigued, I admit that I was kind of afraid.  I typically like my snack bars to be of the sweet variety, so savory didn't quite jive with me.  Still, I was curious to give them a shot so that leads me to this review of this KIND Strong & Kind Honey Mustard Almond Protein Bar that I was able to pick up for $1.25.  Each gluten free bar is 1.5 ounces with 230 calories and ten grams of protein, for the record.

As you can see in the photo above, despite the fact that this is savory, it doesn't look much different than a typical kind bar.  Lots of nuts (almonds) and lot of seeds (pumpkin seeds) are mixed in with several other ingredients (various chilis including ancho, chipotle, etc., along with paprika, mustard, garlic, etc.) and then bound together with honey.  Once you get past that though, this one differed quite a bit as it had a mustard and spicy smell as soon as I took it out of the wrapper.  If smell was any gauge, I was expecting this one to have a lot of flavor.

And I was right.  This one did have a lot of flavor and did have a lot of mustard flavor with a slight hint of sweet, as I'd expect from something that was trying to emulate honey mustard.  What I didn't expect was the amount of spice that was coming out of this one.  Not only did it have heat from the various chili peppers and paprika, but it also had a black peppery spice to it as well.  Basically, that's my way of say that this wasn't your typical sweetish salad dressing type of honey mustard.  It was one that had the volume turned up on it.  Outside of the flavor, the only other real aspect discussing here was the texture and it was really no different than a typical kind bar.  A lot of crunch from the large almonds and a lot of graininess from all the various seeds and crisps mixed within the rest of the bar.  All in all, it was chewy with bursts of popping nuts on the overwhelming amount of occasions.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I can certainly say this was different than what I've typically reviewed on the blog and while it may not have been my favorite thing in the world because I prefer sweet snack bars, I can say that if I take my personal preferences out of the equation, this is a pretty solid bar that does a good job representing the flavors that it has promised, so I'll give this a BUY IT rating.  I will warn you though that if you are a savory bar person or just have a craving for something savory and like mustard (stay away if you don't), I would suggest that you have something to drink nearby because the heat in this one is going to make you thirsty.

BUY IT!!

  1. I REALLY LIKED THIS BAR AS WELL. Very different and welcome if you want a protein bar for lunch and want something savory for a change instead of sweet. I also tried the "Thai Sweet Chili" flavor of these Kind Bars and it was pretty good as well.
