Review: South Beach Diet Whipped Chocolate Almond Snack Bars

I've mentioned countless times on this blog that one of my strange, quirky and favorite past times is trolling The Dollar Tree to see what kind of random stuff I can find.  It's mostly just junk, but every now and then, something will pop up that is actually a viable purchase.  As it relates to today's review, that is just the case as I was able to pick up this box of five South Beach Diet Whipped Chocolate Almond Snack Bars on sale for the unsurprising $1.00 to add to my South Beach Diet review collection.  Each bar in the box is 0.98 ounces and has 100 calories and six grams of protein.

As you can see from the photo above, South Beach Diet really took the "whipped" part of the name into consideration with this and created what was essentially a nougat interior.  Being that it was chocolate and whipped, it reminded me of a Three Musketeers candy bar.  Not my favorite candy bar, but definitely one that I'd eat if someone put it in front of me.  Outside of that whipped interior is a smattering of almond pieces that are then enrobed in a thick layer of chocolate.  The bar itself smelled strongly of chocolate, so it was clear that from an architecture standpoint, I probably was not going to get hosed.

Biting into this is definitely a reminder of the aforementioned Three Musketeers bar as the interior is soft and somewhat gummy in the fact that when you bite it, you have to pull the bar away from your teeth in order to rip it apart.  In terms of flavor, the chocolate is definitely present and sweet, but it isn't overpowering, which is nice since you could imply that this isn't real chocolate since the packaging clearly states this is chocolate "flavored" which could mean that there is no chocolate.  The exterior chocolate adds to that and melts densely over the top of the whipped interior, so it essentially is the candy bar...except for the presence of the almonds, which added an occasional crunchy aspect to what is a very rubbery type of mouthfeel.  If it weren't for those nuts, this might be unappealing, but they break up the texture just enough to allow this bar to avoid being boring.

Buy It or Fly By It?  It avoids being boring and actually has some pretty solid flavor, so I'll give this a BUY IT rating.  It's a low calorie, chocolatey snack that is worth consuming if you can get over the somewhat weird texture, especially when you can steal it for a dollar per box like I did at my beloved Dollar Tree.

BUY IT!!
