Review: Breyers Gelato Indulgences Tiramisu

If you are a semi-regular reader of the blog, you may have noticed recently that I've been trying to stay away from the frozen dessert-types of products.  I developed an out of control fetish for them last year and my goal for the past few months has been to try to bring that under control.  But, every now and then, I revert to my old self (usually caused by a sale and/or coupon) and when I was strolling through my local Kroger recently, I saw a new Breyers product with this 28.5 ounce container of Breyers Gelato Indulgences Tiramisu that I knew I had to try and add to my review catalog.  Each container of this gelato has seven half-cup servings and each serving is 170 calories.

I'm going to do something rare here and show two pictures of the particular product because the appearance above and below the surface was entirely different.  What you see above is the top of the container with the cocoa dust spread over the top of the gelato.  It didn't really smell all that much of cocoa because...

of what lies beneath (hey, that was a movie title!).  Beneath that layer of cocoa dust is a mascarpone flavored gelato that was especially creamy mixed with swirls of espresso sauce.  That espresso sauce smelled strongly of coffee like a well-done tiramisu tends to do and while tiramisu is certainly not my favorite dessert, I do enjoy it in moderation.  Within the mix of that mascarpone gelato and espresso swirl are some small ladyfinger cookie pieces (just like the dessert) and well, I'm just going to hand this one off to Breyers:  "Savor a moment of delicate mascarpone gelato, decadent espresso sauce, ladyfinger cookie pieces and gourmet cocoa."

In terms of the flavor of this, it was pretty much what I'd expect from a tiramisu in creamy, cooling gelato form.  It had present, but not strong cocoa flavoring and the mascarpone gelato tasted exactly what I would have expected it to taste like with its mild sweetness.  What surprised me that the espresso flavor was so strong in the espresso swirls.  Those swirls were quite gooey too and I can honestly say that was a present surprise as the gooeyness added kind of a fun counterpoint of flavor to the creamy gelato.  It brought a strong, but not overpowering, coffee flavor to this as well.  As for the ladyfingers, I could feel their soft, chewy texture when I encountered them in each spoonful and they did have a hint of cinnamon-like flavor, but that soft and chewy texture got kind of lost within the creaminess of the gelato and the gooeyness of the espresso swirl.  They were usually bunched together too, so Breyers could have done a better job distributing them throughout the container.  Oh well.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I mentioned previously that tiramisu is not my favorite dessert and I can only really enjoy it in moderation.  I would say I have a similar outlook on this.  I can eat it in small portions, but I don't think I could devour an entire container like I could with some frozen desserts.  Either way, this gets a BUY IT rating and is an interesting and tasty introduction into the gelato world for Breyers.

BUY IT!!

  1. Given your love of caramel (me too!) I would have thought you go for the Caramel. Though, I'm not a fan of the light, airy texture, I really enjoyed it's flavor.

  2. Ordinarily I would have, but I figured that I would try something "unique and different" for the first Breyers gelato review on the blog. That was clearly a mistake.
