Review: Only Fruit bar Walnuts

I love Facebook and I love free samples.  When the two of those things come together, it's almost like a dream come true for me.  That's what happened with the source of today's review as I was able to get a free sample of this Only Fruits bar Walnuts via a Facebook promo code.  This one comes in at 1.4 ounces and after examining the wrapper, I came to the conclusion that was the only traditional type of number reporting that they were going to do.  When I was looking at the nutritional information on the back of the wrapper, it was amusing to me how precise everything was as it was going to decimals, precise calorie counts, ingredient percentages, etc.  I don't typically see that as most manufacturers seemingly round numbers off to the largest whole number.  In the case of this bar, it was 139 calories and 1.78 grams of protein.  This bar is produced in Transylvania, Romania (home of Dracula) and having worked directly with a Romanian for several years, I can understand the compulsion for PRECISE numbers on a label.  Must be a cultural thing.

Continuing with the goofy numbers theme, the back of this wrapper specifically lists the percentage of the top two ingredients.  In case you are curious, which you probably are since you are reading this review, the top two ingredients in this consist of 59% prunes and 19% walnuts.  That 59% number is a prune puree that is mixed with other fruits (blackberries, blueberries and cranberries) in much smaller percentage to make up the bulk of the bar.  Along with those fruits, there's also small bits (19%!) of walnut pieces and oats spread throughout the mix as well.  From a physical touch and smell standpoint, it's a soft and sticky bar that smells slightly of cinnamon, but primarily of cranberry.  However it smells or feels though, I felt like I was about 90 years old before I dove into this since it has such a large percentage of prunes as part of its composition.

As I took a bite of this soft bar, my first flavor taste was that of prunes and I'm personally not a huge fan of prunes (I'm only 34 years old, so that may explain why), so that was kind of disappointing.  I Wasn't disappointed for long though because the tangy cranberry flavor kicked in followed quickly by a short burst of cinnamon "heat" before the bar returned to the prune/berry flavor.  It was like riding a roller coaster with how up, down and everywhere this bar was.  Successive bites provided similar effects and honestly, I'm not sure I've ever been on that crazy of a loop when trying out what is seemingly a simple product before.  It was simultaneously fun and strange.  As for the rest of the components, they added a bit of grainy and occasional crunch to the texture of the bar, but not a lot of flavor.

Buy It or Fly By It?  By the third bite, I was craving the roller coaster ride of flavor and from an overall perspective, this bar was pretty solid and gets a BUY IT rating.  There's a bit too much prune, but I can get over that because the rest of the up and down ride was so much fun.  That fact that there was some minimal crunch to the chewiness made this enjoyable as well and a nice change of pace to what I typically expect in one of these health/nutrition bars.

BUY IT!!
