Review: South Beach Diet Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Meal Bars

Freebies and coupons lead me to make a lot of impulse purchases.  I've mentioned before that Kroger has a Free Friday Download via their smartphone coupon app, so on a recent Friday, they offered up the subject of today's review with this box of five South Beach Diet Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Meal Bars that I was able to pick up to add to my growing South Beach Diet review collection.  Each bar in the box weighs in at 1.76 ounces and has 180 calories with twelve grams of protein.  In terms of sheer size, I think you could definitely classify this as a meal bar like South Beach Diet is doing.

Since South Beach Diet was so kind to put a product image on the front of the box, the mystery of the big "reveal" of peeling back the wrapper was taken away from me, but I was okay with that.  The bar itself had a peanut butter coating base layer which was then topped with a layer of soy crisps that were mixed in with more peanut butter and cubes of chocolate chips.  The bar was soft and broke easily and carried a mild smell of peanut butter.  Outside of that, there's not a lot to say about this one.

Biting into this provided me the soft and chewy texture that I would have expected.  The peanut butter coating melted in my mouth and provided a gooey texture to coat that grainy base mix of the bar.  Within that soft and chewy base mix were the chunks of chocolate that provided some crunch and that crunch then melted quickly to provide a bit of decadence tot he package.  Both the peanut butter and chocolate themselves were not overly sweet, but they were rich in terms of the depth of creaminess they brought to the bar mix as it melted in my mouth.  All in all, this was chocolate and peanut butter in their basic forms, but not anything that was outstanding.

Buy It or Fly By It?  While I would have preferred a bit more sweetness out of this because that's my general disposition toward food, I'll say that this was a solid and very edible bar, so it gets a BUY IT rating.  It's dense and large enough that it could be considered a meal bar too (a small meal), so I think South Beach Diet has really hit it on this one and delivered with one of the classic flavor combinations out there.

BUY IT!!
