Review: South Beach Diet Good to Go Peanut Butter Cereal Bars

I’ve never been to South Beach in Miami, but I think I’ve made the joke before that it must be so much of a walking meat market that people have actually created a diet bearing its name so that they will look sexy parading themselves up and down the beach.  I live in Indiana and if you aren’t aware, we don’t have a lot of beaches, so having six pack abs is not much of a priority for me.  That said, eating (and snacking) are priorities for me, so that leads me to today’s review of these South Beach Diet Good to Go Peanut Butter Cereal Bars.  I picked up a box of five of these for $2.99 (before the coupon on the front of the box) at Kroger and each bar is 1.23 ounces with 140 calories and a surprising nine grams of protein.  This Peanut Butter flavor is tagged as a “New” flavor, which I’m not sure how that is possible since it is such a basic flavor, but I’ll play along.

As you can see from this bar, it a standard loose cereal mix as the base of the bar.  The bar is then bound together with peanut butter and topped with what was originally a decorative peanut butter on top, but lost it’s beauty by either melting or my personal mishandling of the bar itself.  It was soft and broke apart easily and it also carried a delightful smell of peanut butter.  That abundance of peanut butter also made this quite a sticky bar to handle as well.

After having this be so easy to break apart, it should come as no surprise that my first bite resulted in a soft and chewy bar.  The cereal mix made it a bit grainy, which was good, but it was very chewy.  The peanut butter also made it a bit sticky, so it was almost as if I was eating a piece of bread with peanut butter on it.  Being that is one of my favorite past times, I was very much in favor of that.  The peanut butter flavor itself was very basic.  It really didn’t have much sweetness to it and it was basically very plain.  Again, not a bad thing, but if you were looking for something sweet, this is not a good option.

Buy It or Fly By It?  This was the definition of basic, but that’s okay.  The fact that it was basic doesn’t mean that it didn’t deliver flavor any any time that something delivers good peanut butter flavor (albeit not sweet) in my mind, it gets a BUY IT rating.  Now the only thing that might make these bars not worth buying is the regular price, but if you can grab these on sale and/or with a coupon, they are definitely a tasty snack option for when you are on the go.

BUY IT!!
