Review: Pure Protein Double Chocolate Vanilla Crunch Soft Baked Protein Bar

After a long hiatus from the blog, I recently ventured back into Pure Protein territory with one of their line of new soft baked bars and ended up having a very positive experience.  Coming off of that positive experience, I was anxious to try out another one of their bars with today's review of this Pure Protein Double Chocolate Vanilla Crunch Soft Baked Protein Bar that I picked up for $1.00 at Meijer.  Each soft baked bar is 1.58 ounces and has 190 calories and seventeen grams of protein.

Being that the name of the bar starts out with an explanation of how much chocolate was going to be in the bar, it should come as no surprise that the bar had an exterior coating of chocolate.  Within that chocolate coating was a variety of soy crisps, which were undoubtedly added for texture and crunch, but I'll get to that later.  When I broke the bar in half, I was introduced to a moderately smelling layer of vanilla marshmallow creme that resided beneath the chocolate exterior and above the chocolate interior core of the bar (thus the double part of the chocolate in the name).  That chocolate interior was clearly the soft baked part and somewhat resembled a cake or brownie in its composition.  Just taking a very wide angle look at this reminded me somewhat of a Hostess Ho-Ho and being that I used to devour those as a child, that kind of made me giddy even before I took a bite of this.

Once I took a bite, I was met with a chocolate flavor that was dense, but not particularly sweet.  I would go so far as to say that the flavor was more flat that it was anything.  What saved that flat chocolate flavor was a mild sweetness coming from the vanilla flavored marshmallow creme that wrapped up the soft baked interior.  Being that this was soft baked, it was a chewy bar and the interior added more mild, flat flavored chocolate chewiness that was counteracted by the soy crisps that added crunch to each bite, as I would have expected and mentioned previously.  The one thing that was kind of neat about this entire bar package is that the longer each bite stayed in the warmth of my mouth, the more it melted and started to have some decadent qualities.  I won't go so far as to say it actually was decadent, but it did possess some qualities of that.

Buy It or Fly By It?  All in all, this was a decently wrapped package of a bar.  Not as good as a Ho-Ho, which is of course an unfair expectation and a totally different kind of product, but it was still solid enough to get a BUY IT rating.  I've got to say that Pure Protein has hit on something with these soft baked bars, because my experiences with them have been memorable in a positive way.  If you grab one of these off the shelf, I think you'll have a similar experience.

BUY IT!!
