Review: Pure Organic Chocolate Brownie Bar

I've always seen the subject of today's review on the shelf at my local Meijer store, but I've never grabbed one.  Something about the price point of them always scared me away, which is silly considering their regular price is around two dollars.  That said, I was on a recent trip to the store and saw these on sale for $1.67 and picked up a few flavors to try.  I'm also more motivated to try these now because I noticed they were vegan and I have a new co-worker who is also a vegan and I'd like to have some conversations (food related) with her because those are always fun conversations in my opinion.  With that charge, I snapped up this Pure Organic Chocolate Brownie Bar and it comes in at 1.7 ounces with 190 calories and six grams of protein.  Like I said, it's vegan, but it's also organic and gluten free.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect prior to unwrapping this, but when I did unwrap it, I was greeted with something that looked very similar to a Larabar.  The bar was sticky, but like a Larabar, it was made primarily of a date puree with some nuts and dark cocoa mixed in.  The nuts included almonds, walnuts and cashews (in the form of butter).  It was also soft and had a strong chocolate smell, just like a brownie, so I'd say that this was close to the actual namesake out of the gate.

As I bit into this, the texture and flavor was just like a brownie too, albeit a walnut flavored brownie.  Yep, I really could taste the walnuts in this and that's surprising to me because in my experience, walnuts are usually a weak flavored nut.  That was not the case here.  In terms of the rest of the bar, it had a flat, but appealing chocolate flavor and it really was like a brownie.  What moderate sweetness there was came from the date puree, but it was only a mild sweetness and did not take anything over at all.

Buy It or Fly By It?  At first glance, you would just think this would be a boring old chocolate brownie and while it was a chocolate brownie, it was an absolutely delicious one and I give this a big time BUY IT rating.  I couldn't care less if this was vegan, made on Mars or whatever, this was darn good and I would encourage anyone to give this a try if you see it in your store.  And yes, I did recommend it to my vegan co-worker and it made a nice conversation starter.

BUY IT!!
