Review: Gatorade G-Series Recover Chocolate Chip Whey Protein Bar

Sometimes I think there are some companies that are taking over the world.  Microsoft used to be one of them, but they've faded away.  Nike used to be one of them too, but while they are still very strong, they are not the mega-brand that they used to be in my mind.  The best example I can think of currently is Apple.  They own us.  The reason I bring this up is that Gatorade (I know they are a subsidiary of Pepsi) might be trying to join this club as well as they've now ventured into the nutrition bar realm with this Gatorade G-Series Recover Chocolate Chip Whey Protein Bar that snuck up on me one day on a visit to Kroger.  Since I'm curious, I picked this up for $1.99 and it weighs in at 2.8 ounces with 350 calories and twenty grams of protein.

If the measurements above didn't clue you in originally, I'll go ahead and type out that this bar had some major bulk to it.  It was dense, heavy and tightly compacted.  The bar itself though was pretty darn basic.  It was a chocolate coated exterior with an interior of soy crisp (made with whey protein) that has a mix of mini chocolate chips throughout.  Basic construction of a bar, but I have to say that it smelled delightfully of chocolate.

Biting into the bar was a bit difficult because the bar itself was quite tough, but that shouldn't come as a surprise since this was such a solid block from a physical standpoint.  Once I got chewing, it softened up quickly, so that was a relief.  In terms of flavor, it was kind of like a chocolate chip cookie in a very bizarre way.  The chocolate exterior and chips were rich and sweet and then there seemed to be a hint of vanilla flavoring in there, but I could have just been imagining that.  Imagination or not, that's my best description and if something is like the best cookie every invented, then it gets high marks from me.  Funny thing is that after eating this huge bar, I still wanted more because it was so tasty.  That could just be because I have an insatiable appetite though.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I've already said that this gets high marks from me, so clearly this is a BUY IT product.  This is an outstanding entry into this protein bar market by Gatorade since they took a very basic flavor combination and did it extremely well.  Sometimes companies think too hard and get too creative and it ends up shooting them in the foot.  Gatorade didn't think to hard at all and did something basic very well and I commend them for that.

BUY IT!!

  1. I think Google is getting to be even scarier than Apple these days.

As for this bar... I have to say I'm surprised it got such high marks from you; sometimes when a company branches out into a new product category, the results can be disastrous... nice to see that Gatorade seems to have avoided this and actually made a decent protein bar. Will have to keep my eyes open for this one and give it a try.

    1. I generally don't pay attention to sugar content, so I hadn't even thought about it until your comment. Yeah, that's a lot I suppose, but you can only live once. Ha!
