Review: Pure Protein Double Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch Soft Baked Protein Bar

Pure Protein has gotten creative recently after a long lapse in reviews.  First (based on when I found them), the rolled out a line of Greek yogurt covered protein bars.  Now, as I perused the nutrition bar section at Meijer, I found that they've released a line of soft-baked protein bars and wanting to try out something new as always, I decided to grab this Pure Protein Double Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch Soft Baked Protein Bar (wow, that's a long name) off the shelf for $1.25.  This soft baked bar comes in at 1.58 ounces and has 190 calories and seventeen grams of protein.

I've got to admit that I was a little bit surprised by the composition of this.  First, I did not expect the little soy crisps masquerading as crunchy nut-type things that are melted into the exterior chocolate of the bar.  Secondly, I didn't expect the core of the bar to resemble a roll of chocolate, similar to a Tootsie Roll.  Outside of that Tootsie Roll-type interior was a disappointingly thin layer of peanut butter.  Honestly, I expected a bit more out of this, but ultimately, I'll live.  What was also moderately disappointing is that when I took a big whiff of this, it had that manufactured/reinforced type of chocolate and peanut butter smell and not they typical smell you'd expect from a jar of peanut butter or a candy bar.

The first true test of this bar based on its name should be whether this actually is truly soft baked and I can confirm that for a protein bar, I think classifying it as soft baked would be fair.  It wasn't warm cookie soft, but it was soft enough.  While I'm already talking about the texture, I might as well drop in that the various soy crisps added an airy and grainy crunch to each bite, so that was a nice way to break up the softness of the bar itself.  As for flavor, this was fairly mediocre at first as the chocolate was surprisingly rich and the thin layer of peanut butter was essentially flavorless.  I was prepared to completely write this off, but the aftertaste is where this bar gets you as the combination of the peanut butter flavor and also the included brown sugar hits late and adds for a delightful taste to linger in your mouth.  All in all, it was a slow start and a strong finish.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I was fully prepared to doubt this bar, but the longer I let it linger in my mouth and the more that I thought about it, the more I liked this and therefore give it a BUY IT rating.  I ended up liking this a lot in the end and would judge this as a successful foray by Pure Protein into a different product line.

BUY IT!!

  1. I just love Pure Protein. My favorite bar after Quest :) Haven't seen these around in anything but the value pack yet, I can't wait to get my hands on one! I just had the new Greek yogurt coated strawberry bar. Really good, excited to try the blueberry now.
