Review: MET-Rx NOS Pumped Chocolate Mixed Berry Energy Bar

Early in the history of this blog, I hit a lot of MET-Rx products and compared to now, they blog was heavily meathead focused.  Over time, I've drifted away from the hardcore muscle bars and have gone more toward the snack/energy bar realm.  Occasionally though, I'll drift back into that hardcore world (albeit hardcore energy) and that leads me to today's review of a new product that I found on the shelves of my local Walmart with this MET-Rx NOS Pumped Chocolate Mixed Berry Energy Bar that I picked up for on sale $1.67.  Each bar weighs in at 1.94 ounces and has a relatively tame 220 calories and thirteen grams of protein.

Breaking this in half provided a fairly basic presentation.  The exterior of the bar was chocolate covered and the interior of the bar consisted of the typical soy crisp with a mix of pineapple and cranberry juices, which lent this a pinkish color and also an overwhelming smell of berries (since when is pineapple a berry?) coming out of the wrapper.  It was almost too much for my nose to handle, to be honest.  The chocolate really had no smell that I could detect, but that could just be because the "berry" smell was so overpowering.

That overpowering smell carried over to the taste because this was all tang, all the time.  It was mostly pineapple and while I can deal with pineapple flavor in moderation, this was just too much.  There was some additional sweetness provided by the cranberry infused soy crisp, but nothing that would even compete with that pineapple flavor.  As for the chocolate, it was basically non-existent and was just there as window dressing.  I supposed it did melt in my mouth as I made my way through this extremely crunchy bar that was borderline difficult to chew, but outside of that melting, that chocolate did absolutely nothing for the flavor.  This was pineapple and and unless pineapples are now a berry, I'm not sure that this bar was named correctly.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I threw out the second half of this bar because the pineapple was just too sour, so that clearly indicates that this gets a FLY BY IT rating.  I'm not the world biggest fan of pineapples, so I may be biased, but I think that even a person that enjoys pineapples would find this to be too much to take.  It was just weird and way to overpowering and perhaps MET-Rx should send this one back to R&D for future testing and/or re-formulating.

FLY BY IT!!
