Review: Dannon Oikos Traditional Lemon Meringue Greek Yogurt

I've reviewed a lot of Dannon yogurts on this blog and have also reviewed quite a few of the Oikos line of Greek yogurts as well, although I don't know that I've ever done one of the "Traditional" Oikos flavors, so today's review is a first.  With that said, I picked up this 5.3 ounce single serving cup of Dannon Oikos Traditional Lemon Meringue Greek Yogurt at Marsh for $1.00.  Each cup has 170 calories and eleven grams of protein.

One thing that was particularly unique about this cup of yogurt was that the container actually had a tagline on it of "With Room For Toppings".  I can't say that I've ever seen that before.  Regardless, I didn't add any toppings and what I got was what you see in the picture above.  It was a very thick and creamy Greek yogurt with a slight yellow coloring, much like the namesake lemon meringue pie.  It had a strong smell of Greek yogurt that was followed up by a very faint smell of lemon.  Interestingly (to me), those two flavors combined smell almost cottage cheese-y to me.  Or, maybe I was just having a stroke and imagining things.

As I took my first spoonful of this, I was immediately struck by how well this did in emulating the namesake pie that the flavor was patterned after.  I expected lemon flavor and I got that, although it was very mild and more of an aftertaste than anything.  What I didn't expect was such strong meringue flavor, since I don't think I've ever experienced that in the many meringue flavored products that I've had in the past.  That meringue flavor was quite tasty and when it was met by a late kiss of lemon flavor, it was quite a solid combination.  Another thing that surprised me about this was that despite the strong Greek yogurt smell that this had, it really did not have a lot of Greek yogurt flavor as most Greek yogurts typically do.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this, so I give it a hearty BUY IT rating.  I didn't have high expectations of this going in, so it obviously exceeded my expectations and turned out to be a very tasty product.  The lemon flavor was just tame enough that this was a pleasing and enjoyable treat and if you would like to try something that does a kind of fun re-creation of the namesake pie, this would be right up your alley.

BUY IT!!

  1. I wholeheartedly agree. This yogurt is more than just yogurt, it is a true dessert and is something I crave. I have to actually take a step back to not eat 2 or 3 containers I enjoy it that much. It is wonderful! I do enjoy the other traditional, especially since I can stir them. It's so unappealing to me that I can't stir most Greek yogurts or at least they suggest not to and that clear liquid on top is very disturbing to me..lol! Dannon really hit a home-run with the Oikos traditional line. I always was a Yoplait fan until now...I'm a true convert.
