Review: Boca Original Chik'n Veggie Patties

I mentioned in my last Boca review that I had stayed away from Boca products on the blog for quite some time and I wasn't quite sure why.  Since I'm trying to work more of their products in to the rotation, today's review hits on one of their core products with my review of this box of Boca Original Chik'n Veggie Patties that I picked up on sale at Kroger for $3.00.  Each box contains four patties and each patty is 71 grams with 140 calories and eleven grams of protein.  Each patty is also worth four points on the Weight Watchers PointsPlus scale if you are into that type of thing.

As you can see from the photo above after I took this one out of the microwave, this soy "Chik'n" patty looks just like any frozen chicken patty that I could get from any variety of vendors at my local grocery store.  The breading itself was fairly loose, but crusty enough that I knew it would add some graininess to each bite.  Outside of those very basic observations, there's not much else to say here as this original product is about as basic as a product can be.

After I took my first bite, I was pleasantly surprised about how this reminded me of one of those standard frozen chicken patties that I've had many times throughout the course of my life.  The soy interior was juicy and mildly carried a flavor of chicken, which was enough to confuse my mind into thinking it really was chicken instead of the soybeans that I knew this consisted of.  If something is good enough to confuse one's mind, then it probably is a pretty good product.  The breading also carried that same motif of a breaded chicken sandwich, so all in all, this was a reasonable approximation of what I would have hoped it would have been.

Buy It or Fly By It?  There's not a big reason to waste a lot of keystrokes on this very basic, but tasty product, so I'll just come out and give it a BUY IT rating.  It's a reasonable approximation of the real thing and if you are a vegetarian or are looking for a way to give meat the night off in your diet, I think this is a good alternative for you to grab out of your local grocer's freezer case.

BUY IT!!
