Review: Promax Cookies 'n Cream Energy Bar

Cookies and cream.  Yum.  Great intro, eh?  Seriously, I've hit on Promax bars here on the blog before, but it has been quite a while since I did so.  One thing I've always loved about these bars is the tagline that they carry on the wrapper proclaiming them as a "Great Tasting Energy Bar."  I think that there lack of hubris is beyond amusing, so I got a chuckle as I grabbed this Promax Cookies 'n Cream Energy Bar off the shelf at Kroger for $1.67.  Each bar comes in at 2.64 ounces and is 270 calories with twenty grams of protein.

As you can see from the picture above, the actual bar I took out of the wrapper does not exactly look like the bar on the wrapper itself.  The wrapper portrays a bar covered thickly in a cream coating.  The actual bar only has a thin layer of cream coating, so that was quite disappointing as I was looking forward to a thickly coated bar.  The interior part of the bar was the cookie portion of the bar as it contained a brownie like interior surrounded by a gummy chocolate interior.  The chocolate and cream both carried smells like you'd expect, although the chocolate smell was quite strong which was of course nice since chocolate rules.  One particularly unique characteristic, in my opinion, that this bar had was it broke in half quite easily, almost like a baked good.  That has no basis on anything other than I found it an interesting observation.

The flavor was a lot like the smell in that this was more chocolate and cream.  That chocolate flavor was rich and sweet, which was nice, but the texture of the chocolate was mostly gummy like protein bars can sometimes be, which I don't find at all appealing.  The cream flavor was noticeable, but not all that potent.  What flavor that was noticeable though had a metallic-type of aftertaste that a lot of manufactured bars have and needless to say, that's not exactly appetizing.  The one positive characteristic that this had was that it did melt over the strong tasting, although gummy, chocolate interior.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I desperately wanted to like this bar because the cookies and cream combination is a good one when done well, but this bar just did not do it well enough, so I'm going to give it a FLY BY IT rating.  Not only was there poor balance between the cookies and cream flavor, but this bar tasted far too manufactured and it wasn't all that appealing in the end.  Too bad because when I grabbed this one off the shelf, I had such high hopes.

FLY BY IT!!
