Review: Caveman Cranberry Apricot Bar

I love the name of these Caveman Foods bars and each time I do a review on them, it makes me chuckle.  I also love that they are "paleo friendly" and by being that, they are definitely sticking to the caveman motif that the name of the bar is obviously inferring.  So, with a smile on my face, I decided now would be as good of a time as ever to review this Caveman Cranberry Apricot Bar that I picked up on sale at Meijer for $0.75.  The bar itself is 1.4 ounces and has 190 calories with five grams of protein.

Being that these are paleo friendly and trying to re-create that theme, it should come as no surprise that these are constructed on a basis of fruits and nuts.  In the instance of this bar, the nuts include large almonds and broken up cashew pieces.  The fruits are dried cranberries and apriocts, which are also visible throughout the mix of the bar as well.  Additionally, there is a plethora of seeds spread throughout and those seeds include pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and sunflower seed.  In terms of smell and feel, this bar is surprisingly sticky and has an very potent nutty smell.

As I bit into this bar, it came as no surprise that it was exceptionally crunchy.  It was a mix of big crunch from those huge almonds and grainy crunch from the combination of seeds and ground up cashews that were spread throughout.  In terms of flavor, the almonds definitely one out as this one had that almond/nutty taste with an extra hint of saltiness that came not only from the nuts, but also the inclusion of sea salt in the general mix of the bar.  As for the fruit components, they were kind of absent from the entire bar.  I could feel them as I chewed through as they changed up the chewing texture of the bar a bit, but in terms of flavor, they were almost a no show as any flavor they did have was VERY slight.  Perhaps the prevalence of the salt aspect of this bar basically just cancelled out any fruity tang or sweetness, but that was not something that I expected or was particularly fond of for that matter.  Still, as a crunchy bar, this more than fit the bill.

Buy It or Fly By It?  While I would have appreciated more sweetness and tang and less saltiness, I still found this bar to be appetizing and for that it gets a BUY IT rating.  It's certainly one that you want to have a drink nearby for when you are consuming it and don't expect to get a lot of sweetness, but if you want something nutty and salty to consume just like a caveman, this is absolutely a solid option.

BUY IT!!
