Review: Blue Bell Kentucky Delight Ice Cream

I've reviewed Blue Bell ice creams on the blog before, but I think the subject of today's review is the first time that I've been able to review a "secret" flavor before.  What I mean by that is that there is very little mention of this Blue Bell Kentucky Delight Ice Cream anywhere on the web.  It's not on their website and there are only a few sporadic internet sites that even mention it.  Not sure if this is a test, a discontinued flavor or what, but I feel special in bringing you this review today.  Anyway, I picked this up on sale at Marsh for $4.44 (nice price) and each container is the Blue Bell Standard half gallon.  In that half gallon, there are sixteen half-cup servings and each serving comes in at 190 calories.

I'll take the description straight from the container:  "Brown Sugar Ice Cream with Dark Chocolate Chunks, Roasted Walnut Pieces, Pie Crust Pieces and a Caramel Sauce."  Now, I'm not going to fuss on those ingredients because they were all there in plentiful amounts and the brown sugar did have a mild smell permeating from it, but I will complain about one thing...what do you think of when you think of Kentucky?  Personally, I think of horse racing, cheating basketball teams and BOURBON.  How could something called Kentucky's Delight and also something with the tagline of "Bluegrasss State Flavor" on the packaging not include the drink that the state is known for in the ingredients?  I'm not some sort of raging drunk that needs bourbon in my ice cream, but that just seems like a massive dropped ball on the part of Blue Bell.  Alright, enough complaining...

When I took my first spoonful of just the brown sugar ice cream itself, I was decidedly underwhelmed.  I was expecting dense brown sugar flavor, but what I got instead was a mostly vanilla tasting ice cream that had a hint of brown sugar.  It was still a fine tasting ice cream, but the promise of brown sugar ice cream was kind of a broken one.  As for the chunks and walnuts, they were exactly as I would have expected them as they brought crunch and/or decadence to each spoonful, which was nice.  The caramel added a gooey sweetness to the package as well, so that was nice as well.  What was neat about this were the pie crust pieces.  They were alternately flaky and chewy at the same time, so combined with the gooey caramel the crunchy nuts and the crunchy/melty chunks, there was a heck of a lot of textural components packed into this half gallon of ice cream.

Buy It or Fly By It?  After having such high expectations going in, I've got to admit that I was kind of let down by this.  That being said, this was not a bad ice cream flavor and I enjoyed it, for the most part.  For that reason, it gets a BUY IT rating.  Where this struggled was in how it was named, which I've already complained about ad nauseam, so I'll just stop here.  Now, I'd just like to know what the story is with this flavor.  Is it a test, discontinued or what?  Regardless, if you see it in your grocer's freezer case and any of these flavors sound appealing to you, I think this would be one that you would enjoy trying out.

  1. The reason they called it "Kentucky delight" is because it takes the ingredients from Kentucky's famous "Derby Pie." Since you call yourself crazy food dude, you should be familiar with such an awesome desert.

  2. Yep, Derby Pie dude... It's a Kentucky traditional dessert

  3. I miss being able to buy this in the stores since the listeria outbreak and they pulled all products off the shelf. I can't wait to see it back in stores. As for cheating basketball don't judge it by one coach that brought shame on such a prestigious organization.
