Review: Fiber One 90 Calories Lemon Bars

Keeping up with all the new product that flood the market, seemingly at once, can be exhausting.  Yes, I signed up for this "burden" when I created a food review blog, but sometimes it's hard to maintain the motivation to keep posting and seeking out new thing.  But, as a service to you (but primarily a way to increase my income; sorry, I do this for the revenue), I do my best to keep the content fresh and relevant.  It's that effort that leads me to churn out another Fiber One review with this review of their new Fiber One 90 Calories Lemon Bars.  I picked up a box of six of these at Meijer in a crazy sale for the bargain basement price of $1.99.  Each bar (or brownie as the Fiber One website refers to them as) is 0.89 ounces and is of course 90 calories.  It's got less than a gram of protein, but it does have 20% of your recommended fiber intake in just this little package.

These mass producers, General Mills in this case, don't exactly leave a lot of mystery to these products and their appearance.  It's obvious that they do that to generate mass appeal and mass sales, so that customers know what they are getting and that is no different with this box as it pretty much reveals the "mystery" of discovery with this bar.  My picture above clearly confirms that the picture on the box is pretty spot-on in terms of its representation of the bar.  What the bar doesn't confirm is the smell and feel of this bar, so I'll just go ahead and let you know that it was quite soft and doughy, along with having a strong, yet pleasant lemon smell.  What I found moderately interesting and perhaps it's only interesting to me is that the icing on the top of the bar was a lemon icing instead of vanilla, which is what I would have expected.  So, it's clear they are going for maximum lemon coverage with this bar as it has lemon flavored bits (yes, that's the ingredient description) in the actual bar itself and then it is topped with lemon flavored icing.

While this bar was soft and doughy, I was actually surprised by how dry it was.  Not so dry that it made it unbearable or unappetizing, but I would have expected a little bit more moistness.  In terms of the actual flavor, it was all lemon, all the time, which should come as zero surprise whatsoever.  The lemon, while strong, was also pleasing which make the taste analysis identical to my previous smell analysis.  I hate to say this because it seems like such a cop-out that I've used many times before, but the lemon flavor in this had that "fresh" and sinus clearing kind of zing to it, despite the fact that it was clearly manufactured.  Interestingly, the lemon flavored bits in the bar added a bit of crunch to the inside of the bar, so that did a good job breaking up the soft and doughy texture of the bar.  The icing then added a little added lemon flavor with the sort of fun melting quality that coated the doughy portion of the bar as it sat in my mouth.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Ultimately, your potential enjoyment of this bar is going to hinge only on one thing:  how much do you enjoy lemon?  Personally, I enjoy lemon flavored products as long as the flavor isn't so strong that it smacks me in the face.  This fits that description, so I'll give this a BUY IT rating.  If you can't stand the lemon "heat", so to speak, perhaps it is best to refrain from trying out this bar, becuase you are really not going to enjoy it in that situation.

BUY IT!!

  1. I really like this bar, but not as much as the new coffee cake flavor.

  2. It was okay. I didn't find mine dry, it was surprisingly very moist. I also wasn't a fan of the crunchy lemon bits.

  3. I love everything about it. The flavor is perfect. I would not describe it as moist or dry. To me it is a nice, dense cake.

  4. These are hard to find. But I love them - much better than the chocolate chip and others. And they are on 2 WW points plus. Good to curb the sweet craving.

    2. Very small indeed, under 1 oz. now. Still 90 calories though. How did they manage that?
