Review: Health Valley Organic Apple Cobbler Multigrain Cereal Bars

I'm no giant, but being that I'm six feet tall, there's a bit of distance between me and the bottom shelf at the grocery store. Add to that the fact that most stores try to put the most purchased products at eye level for the average American and well, lets just say I don't get down to the bottom much. On a recent trip to Kroger, I must have been feeling a little frisky because I meandered through the health foods section, I came across this box of Health Valley Organic Apple Cobbler Multigrain Cereal Bars, which I had never seen before. There were three different flavors available, so I grabbed all three and you'll see those reviews in the future. Anyway, back to the task at hand...a box of six of these bars was on sale for $2.00 and each bar comes in at 1.3 ounces and has 130 calories and two grams of protein.

Normally in this section of my reviews, I go through the sometimes painstaking process of describing the physical characteristics of a product. In this case, the product name nearly does the entire job for me. It's a multigrain cereal bar, so it's just like all the others: soft, doughy and baked bread-like. The inside is the apple cobbler portion, so the filling is like an mild smelling apple cobbler and also tan colored like the namesake baked product. That's about it. Simple, eh?

The name could have described the taste of this too, because this was just like any other cereal bar I've ever tried. The only difference really was that the apple flavor was not as potent and was actually kind of weak. So weak, in fact, that it allowed itself to be overpowered by the doughy mouthfeel and cereal grain taste of the bar. Since this was modeled after a cobbler, lets just say that the cobbler crust overtook the apple filling. The ingredient list said there was cinnamon in here, but it was almost undetectable which meant there was no heat to this and what apple flavor I could taste was not especially tart either. It was plain Jane all around.

Buy It or Fly By It? Despite the fact that this was plain, there really was nothing wrong with it and it tasted fine. Usually in the instances of plainness, I'm inclined to give a negative review, but mi going to abandon that protocol here and give these bars a BUY IT rating. Maybe my mind is clouded by the astoundingly low sales price, but I see these as being with a purchase and taste.

BUY IT!!

  1. I love the Blueberry and Strawberry Cobbler bars. I used to find them at Harris Teeter, Whole Foods, The Fresh Market, etc. No one carries them in my town now. They disappeared from the shelves. I like them so much that I order them online but I am curious as to what happened. Any ideas?
