Apparently Fruttare bars are another import that we've been deprived of (like Magnum ice cream bars were at one time). Recently though, Unilever (also the importer of Magnum bars) has decided that Fruttare bars should jump from their home country of Brazil and be released to the masses of the United States (they've been available in other parts of the world for quite some time) and spurred on by a free product coupon via my Kroger Plus savings card, I picked up this four pack of Fruttare Coconut and Milk Frozen Dessert Bars on a recent trip to the store. Each bar is 2.7 fluid ounces and 140 calories, so it's a relatively sizable and semi-healthy treat.
As you can see above, there's not a whole lot to describe about this bar visually. It's white, frozen and looks really icy. Yep, that's it. There's a bit more to discuss when the smell is taken into consideration though. That discussion pretty much begins and ends with the fact that the bar smells just like the named ingredients. That's about it. Oh yeah, one more thing...just like Magnum bars, the wooden stick is stamped with the Fruttare word mark.
The website describes the coconut flavor of this bar as being "outrageously creamy" and I'm not quite sure I agree. It does have some degree of a cream factor to it since the bar is milk based, but it's primarily icy. Not as icy as a normal fruit pop, but close. It's obvious the presence of milk saves this one. As for the flavor, it's pretty much as you'd expect from something with coconut and milk. It's alternately refreshing from the milk and semi-sweet from the coconut and the milk. The coconut flavor is mild and pleasant, so if you find yourself coconut averse or shy, this bar isn't going to be ruined by that flavor.
Buy It or Fly By It? There's nothing overly shocking about this bar, but it is a pleasing package mixing two nice flavors of coconut and milk, so it gets a BUY IT rating. As with most coconut products, this bar all comes down to whether you enjoy coconut or not. Being that I enjoy coconut more and more with each passing day after initially hating it for years, I found this bar to be quite enjoyable and you probably would too if you feel the same way. If you don't feel that way about coconut, this is probably not the bar for you. Regardless, it's a good call by Unilever to bring this one here stateside.

I saw these in the store and almost bought them but found a different fruit and milk bar from Bluebell which has fewer ingredients and is cheaper. Almost a dollar less and for six bars, not four. I was really turned off by all the weird ingredients in the Friutare. Bluebell's ingredients are basically milk, coconut and sugar. I love coconut and the Bluebell bars have a ton of flavor, are very creamy and have perfectly sized bits of coconut meat. From your review it sounds like I wouldn't like the Fruitare.
ReplyDeleteI just tried the Banana and Milk bars. They are terrible! Don't waste your money. They taste like they have soft pieces of Banana Taffy candy in them. Too bad, they could of used real banana pieces. I will Never buy any of their bars, not worth taking a chance.

ReplyDeleteYou should give Chunks O' Fruti bars a try. They have real chunks of fruit too but it's flash frozen pieces so you don't get a weird gummy thing like Fruttare bars. They also make milk based ones too that are very similar. But they have way less ingredients and are true Latin American helados. They're made in Florida by a smaller company, not as big as Unilever, with Latino roots.
