Review: Fage fruyo Strawberry Greek Nonfat Yogurt

When this blog first started, I spent a lot of time reviewing Greek yogurt products, including those of Fage.  Since that initial surge, my Greek yogurt reviews have slowed down because my local stores haven't really stocked a lot of new products.  That said, I was cruising through my local Meijer recently when I encountered a Fage product that I had never seen before with this Fage fruyo Strawberry Greek Nonfat Yogurt cup that I picked up on sale for $1.00.  This one's so new, I guess, that they don't even have a spot for it on their website, so I guess I feel special.  For nutritional purposes, this six ounce cup of nonfat yogurt clocks in at 160 calories and since it is Greek yogurt, it's protein heavy at thirteen grams.

As the container tells you, this is blended yogurt, which means that the flavoring is mixed in with the actual Greek yogurt itself instead of the traditional Fage sidecar design where the fruit is separated out from the yogurt and you have to all the work yourself.  Since it is mixed together, this one has the same pinkish hue of a typical strawberry yogurt and although my picture does not do a wonderful job of depicting it, there are several strawberry chunks spread throughout the extremely thick and creamy yogurt.  In terms of smell, it did have a slightly tart smell mixed with a mild strawberry smell as well.  Overall, that smell was pleasing and the visual presentation, while basic, was also pretty nice, so I was eager to dive in.

When I dove in with my first spoonful, I could not get over how thick and creamy this yogurt was and I very much enjoyed that as it reminded me a bit of a soft ice cream and yes, I know that is a convoluted comparison.  Regardless, this had mild, but pleasing strawberry flavor.  When I say it was mild, I mean that it wasn't overly sweet and the strength of flavor wasn't going to pop you in the face.  The one interesting thing about this flavor profile is that the typical strong tartness of Greek yogurt was really not all that present.  It was detectable, but not overly strong and being that I found the strawberry flavor to be so pleasing and not overpowered by the tartness, it was a good combination.  The addition of the little morsels of strawberry spread throughout the cup made for a nice textural difference that broke up the smoothness of the strawberry flavored yogurt itself.

Buy It or Fly By It?  While this may have been a basic flavor, I found it to be a tasty one and I'd even go so far as to describe this as a fun flavor.  Because of that, I'll give it a BUY IT rating.  This is a great first entry with their fruyo line for Fage here on the blog, so now I'm anxious to pick some more of these flavors up for reviews going forward.

BUY IT!!

  1. These are currently imported from Greece instead of being made at their New York plant. They are testing the market here first before they start domestic production.

  2. I tried it for the first time yesterday and am not impressed. Fage is my absolute favorite brand but the Fruyo just doesn't taste very good.

  3. The Fruyo products are amazingly good. I buy it when I can locate it in a store. I meet others who have discovered it in the yogurt aisle in the store. We agree it is the best yogurt ever.

  4. Of note, one of the ingredients in the flavored yogurt is CORN STARCH.
