Review: Skinny Cow Salted Caramel Pretzel Ice Cream Bars

I'm sure most of you have figured it out already, but I've decided that this is Skinny Cow review week.  I've reviewed three products already this week and now it's time for the fourth product that I picked up in the crazy Skinny Cow sale at my local Marsh for $3.99.  This time, I'm taking a look at another one of their ice cream candy bar lines with this review of the Skinny Cow Salted Caramel Pretzel Ice Cream Bars.  Each box contains five 2.1 fluid ounce bars and each bar is 160 calories and scores a four on the Weight Watchers PointsPlus scale.

If you are a regular reader (or at least have looked at the reviews this week), I'll just resort to my overused trick of letting Skinny Cow's website do all the product description work for me:  "Low fat vanilla ice cream topped with layers of luscious caramel and crispy, salty pretzel pieces—all enrobed in decadent chocolatey coating."  And as you can see in the picture above, that descriptions pretty accurate.  The layers of caramel and pretzels were interesting though.  The dark-colored caramel layer was far from gooey and actually was rather sticky and held together in once piece, almost like gelatin.  The pretzel pieces were larger than I would have expected and that was quite nice.  As for the rest of the bar, it was just the standard Skinny Cow low fat vanilla ice cream and hard chocolate exterior.

Much like the last ice cream bar that I reviewed, nothing about this bar screamed "YUMMY" after my first bite.  It was more like, "eh, this is just okay."  Don't get me wrong, I'm not slamming the bar at all, it's just that while it did have a nice recipe for deliciousness, it really wasn't delicious according to what I feel the definition of the word should be.  The caramel, while it did have a mild burnt caramel type flavor, was pretty basic and bland.  On the other hand, the pretzels were fairly salty and what made them a good addition to this bar is that they were extremely crunchy and since they were plentifully spread, it made for a lot of crunch in this bar as they supplemented the crunch from the classic chocolate outer layer.  That chocolate was mildly sweet and worked well with the basic vanilla low fat ice cream  Mixed together, the best way I can think of describing this is that it was acceptable.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Describing something as acceptable is hardly a glowing review and being that I felt exceptionally bored after eating this, I'm going to give it a FLY BY IT rating.  Perhaps there are people out there that will absolutely love this bar and feel differently, but I personally just felt like I was eating something to pass the time as I wasn't moved in either a positive or negative direction after eating this.

FLY BY IT!!

  1. I probably won't try these after the Cookie Dough version.

  2. Then you have a real problem. I have tried both and I believe the crunch in the salted caramel pretzel bar is much better.

    1. I would agree that the salted caramel pretzel bar is the better of the two.

  3. The caramel pretzel bar must be extremely popular....can't find them anywhere and the shelves are empty. The shelves have plenty of the cookie dough version though.

  5. I'm a 120 pound 52 year old female soccer coach who LOVES these! This is my favorite "treat" or "reward" in making sure I stay physically where I need to be. EVERYONE should try these. The chocolate coating and outside crunch combined with the caramel is awesome. And, yes, if you don't get them when they are first put on the shelves, they are GONE!

  6. I also love these bars but I thought there use to be six in a box instead of five?

  7. They are delicious, but messy. I wish they came on a stick. Half way through savoring every bite, my hands has melted it enough to break apart in my hands. Six in box would be nice too. Hubby and I had to wrestle for the last one.
