Review: Odwalla Berries GoMega Superfood Bar

It's been a while since I've done a review of an Odwalla product, so doing one today is my early Christmas present to you.  I've just had no desire to pick one up because nothing about them has ever screamed "Buy Me" in my mind.  Maybe sheer boredom had set in and desperation for something to do had set in on a recent trip to the store because I actually saw the Odwalla products and stopped to take a look.  It was that stop that led me to pick up this Odwalla Berries GoMega Superfood Bar at Meijer for $1.09.  It comes in at a decent-sized 2.0 ounces and has 210 calories and five grams of protein.

As you can tell by the name of this bar and also the packaging, this is a Superfood.  Yes!!!!  Okay, that was pure sarcasm.  Anyway, not only is this a superfood, it's a GoMega superfood, which basically means that it's got bucket loads of berries in the ingredients.  Upon review of the packaging, I discovered this includes blueberries (the only visible berry in the bar), cranberries, dates, plums, raisins, raspberries and strawberries.  That's a whole lot of freaking berries.  The rest of the bar is a cereal mix with visible oat pieces.  It's soft and very pliable and smells strongly of all berries and not any one in particular.

When I was preparing to bite into this, I wasn't sure what to expect.  I knew it would have that cereal bar quality and I was fine with that, but I wasn't sure what berry I could expect in flavor.  What I got was a hodgepodge of berries that all mixed together and caused this to have an extremely strong tang taste that eventually turned into something resembling a sour taste in the end.  In fact, I found it to be too tangy and after making it two-thirds of the way through the bar, I just could not take it any more.  It was just too much tang and since there were so many berries, none of their flavors really stood out to me.  The cereal part of the bar itself was nice and chewy, but not even that could dull the tang of all those berries.

Buy It or Fly By It?  This was too much for me to take and I ended up throwing out the last third of the bar because the tang punched me in the face.  For that reason, I give this a FLY BY IT rating.  Maybe that strength of tang is fine for some people out there, but it just didn't work for me.  It's too bad too because the cereal portion of the bar was nice and if the berry taste had been milder, I think this bar would have really worked.
