Review: Hunt's Snack Pack Bakery Shop Apple Pie A La Mode Pudding

I've shared details of my completely absurd love of all things pudding on this blog before and as I mentioned in my prior Snack Pack reviews, I picked up a few of these special Bakery Shop flavors at Meijer one day and that leads me to the last of that group of purchases with this review of the Hunt's Snack Pack Bakery Shop Apple Pie A La Mode Pudding.  Like the others, I got a four pack of these puddings for $1.00 and each pudding cup is 3.25 ounces and contains the calcium of one whole eight ounce glass of milk.  In the case of these, each pudding cup comes in at 100 calories.

As you can see from the exterior of these pudding cups, Hunt's really took some time to carry out the Apple Pie A La Mode motif as they placed a base layer of "apple pie" pudding below a layer vanilla "ice cream" pudding.  All the "ice cream" layer entailed was vanilla pudding, not that there's anything wrong with that.  The apple pie layer was light brown in color and smelled fairly strongly of both cinnamon and also of apples and I must say, that was surprising.  I didn't expect a whole lot out of this coming in, but the fact that Hunt's nailed the apple and cinnamon smells so well on this made this infinitely more appealing to me as I got ready to dig my spoon into the cup.

First I took a quick taste of the "ice cream" part of the cup and it was vanilla pudding, just as I expected.  One thing I didn't expect was that it had a trace amount of cinnamon taste to it.  If that is what Hunt's intended, that awesome, but I'm guessing that some of the cinnamon taste and flavor from the apple pie pudding bled through.  As for the "apple pie" part of the pudding, all I can say is that it was delightful.  It really did taste like apples mixed with cinnamon and while it clearly was not a pie, it did a reasonable approximation of a pie and is probably the best thing that you can hope for in a pudding product.  Now that I'm typing this review and think about it a bit more, I'm actually growing fonder of how well it tasted.  When that cinnamon from the apple pie pudding, which had a slight amount of spice, was mixed with the cooling vanilla "ice cream" pudding, it was a nice mix of a hot and cool texture.

Buy It or Fly By It?  While this clearly wasn't apple pie and I don't think it had any intentions of being an exact replacement, it did an excellent job of being a reasonable approximation and for that, it gets a BUY IT rating.  The pie crust portion of apple pie was obviously missing, but the remainder of this did a good job impersonating the dessert treat.  And, for a mere 100 calories, getting something that is somewhat close to the wholly unhealthy treat is not a bad trade-off.

BUY IT!!
