Review: Kellogg's Special K Raspberry Cheesecake Bar

As you've seen already this week, my local Meijer has been running a lot of Special K sales recently and judging by the increasing amount of Special K reviews that I've been posting, it's pretty obvious that I went a little bonkers during these sales and bought a lot of products to try out.  It's that buying insanity that leads me to this review of the  Kellogg's Special K Raspberry Cheesecake Bar.  I picked up a box of six of these on sale for $2.50 and each cereal bar in the box comes in at 0.77 ounces and has 90 calories.  It's obviously not a big bar in terms of size or calorie load, but it should make a decent snack based on those parameters.  Of course, where or not something makes a good snack is always subject to its taste and that's why I'm here to service you!

When I took this out of the wrapper, the first thing I noticed was the overwhelmingly strong smell of raspberries and that strength of smell was not something that I was expecting.  Oddly enough, while the smell was definitely raspberry, it reminded me a lot of Fruity Pebbles with its smell and also the fact that the raspberry bits in the bar mix itself kind of looked like Fruity Pebbles as well, which is funny since this bar is a Kellogg's product and Fruit Pebbles are a Post product.  Anyway, the rest of the bar was the standard cereal mix as the bulk of the bar and then the base of the bar was the "cheesecake" portion of the bar as it had that ghost white appearance of cheesecake and smelled strongly of cheesecake as well.  Cheesecake is every glutton's delight and being that I'm one of those, that strong smell of cheesecake was exceptionally appealing to me.

After my first bite, the Fruity Pebbles comparison kind of ended for me, but this bar did have a very strong taste of raspberry to go along with its strong smell.  It was kind of a manufactured taste in that it didn't seem authentic, but being that this is clearly a manufactured bar, that should not be surprising.  The cereal bar portion of the bar (the bulk of the bar) was soft and chewy, so that was nice, but other than that, it didn't really bring anything to the table other than a way to deliver the aforementioned raspberry flavor along with the cheesecake flavor.  It's that cheesecake flavor that made this bar for me because it really did taste comparable to a cheesecake.  It wasn't as rich as cheesecake, as you might expect, but the flavor of it was pretty much right on and was one of the more accurate re-creations of cheesecake that I've ever had in something that was not exactly a cheesecake.

Buy It or Fly By It?  The raspberry was just a strong supporting actor in this bar, so the real star was the cheesecake and it did an outstanding job of reminding me of one of my favorite dessert treats, so I give this a BUY IT rating.  It's a small snack that can perhaps squelch a hunger pang in the middle of the day and get you to the next meal while also reminding you of one of the most decadent desserts that there is.  That's a win-win in my book, so this bar is an all-around winner.

BUY IT!!

  1. Special K bars are so delicious. The protein meal bars are good, too.
