Review: fullbar Double Chocolate Cocoa Chip Bar

It's been a while since I've eaten one of these fullbars and done a review.  I've had them sitting in my drawer at work for a rainy day and I didn't have any lunch with me on a particular day that it coincidentally happened to be raining, so the expression actually held true.  This fullbar Double Chocolate Cocoa Chip Bar was part of a shipment of samples that I received from fullbar, so I don't have a unit price, but what I can tell you is that it is 1.59 ounces, 160 calories and has five grams of protein.  It also provides "Dual-Action Fullness", so take that!  I have no idea why I find that so amusing or why it took me this long to notice that tagline on the bar, but it does seem kind of silly.

The first thing I noticed about this bar when I took it out of the wrapper that was that Double Chocolate is just not a cute name because this one had a very powerful smell of chocolate.  Being the chocolate freak that I am, that was a very welcome smell.  The bar itself was made up of a base of tightly bound and airy chocolate coated puffed wheat pieces that were bound together by honey and other various syrups.  According to the ingredient list, there were also some chocolate chips and small nut pieces of pecans, cashews and walnuts in there, but I couldn't see any upon inspection, so they had to be really tiny.  The bar was then topped with a thick and "fancy" swirl of chocolate to continue the chocolate doubling motif.

When I bit into the bar, I was first hit with a fierce blast of chocolate but that disappeared quickly was replaced with the taste of the puffed wheat cereal with a slight sweet twinge of honey aftertaste.  They honey taste was mild, but it was sweet enough that it was quite pleasing.  One thing that I did find as I was chewing through this soft bar (keep in mind, this was puffed wheat and not crunchy at all) was that the only real chocolate flavoring in this was coming from the swirl on top of the bar and the fact that the puffed wheat was coated in cocoa dust did not really have any impact as well as the supposed presence of chocolate chips in the mix.  That chocolate flavoring in the swirl was briefly sweet, but mostly a thick coating chocolate that worked well with the puffed wheat.  Had the chocolate not been as thick as it was, this bar would have failed on all fronts as it relates to chocolate flavor, but this time it succeeded in providing a nice counter balance to the puffed wheat.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I've got to say that I enjoyed this bar, so I'll give it a BUY IT rating.  The flavor wasn't 100% chocolate all the way though, but it was enough that it satisfied the chocolate lover in me for a little while.  It supposedly made me fuller too (I always question that), so it even has added benefits.  If you are going to make the leap and try out a fullbar, this is definitely one to give a shot.

BUY IT!!

  1. I was so excited to recently find these at Big Lots for $4.50 for a 6-count box - much cheaper than anywhere else. I love them! Hope you got a Chocolate Peanut Butter sample in your shipment.
