Review: CLIF Kid Z Bar Honey Graham Bar

I had reviewed some CLIF Kid Z Bars quite a while ago but since I thought I had touched on all their product offerings, I hadn't really paid attention to them in the stores until recently when my Kroger iPhone application gave me the option of an in store coupon for Z Bars.  Being the coupon hawk that I am, I "clipped" the coupon in the app and went to make a purchase, figuring that it would just be flavors I had seen before.  Much to my surprise, there were two new flavors of Z Bars and this review of the CLIF Kid Z Bar Honey Graham Bar is the first of those two reviews.  With the coupon, I got this for around $0.75 and it's 1.27 ounces with 120 calories and tiny two grams of protein and a lot of whole grains.  I guess I shouldn't be surprised at the low protein level...this is a bar for kids and it is a snack bar.

From it's visual appearance, it would appear that they are at least going in with the intent of making this look like a graham cracker with its light brown coloring.  The bar itself is a log shape and is a mix of very visible oats and not-so-visible soybeans (like they would be visible) topped with an vanilla icing for designer purposes.  It's soft and pliable and has a slight smell of honey.  Outside of that, there's not a whole lot else that special or notable about this bar, so it's not worth wasting any more time.

In terms of taste, there's nothing special or notable about this bar either.  It is soft and doughy and carries a strong oatmeal taste with a faint hint of honey flavoring as an after effect.  The vanilla icing itself proved that it was merely for decoration because I could not detect any sort of flavor influence as I made my way through this very chewy bar that had no crunch whatsoever, which is something I would have expected since this bar is named after a crunchy cracker.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Like I said in both the visual description and the taste description, there's nothing notable or special about this bar, but that doesn't mean it's a bad bar and I give it a BUY IT rating.  It's a nice, safe flavor and since this bar is aimed toward kids, that's a perfect way to design a kids flavor.  Kids don't need to have their taste buds entertained in any sort of spectacular way, they just need something to fill a hunger craving and also something edible.  This bar is perfect for that.  For an adult, it's still an okay bar, but it's not going to knock your socks off.

  1. graham is actually a flour that was used before graham crackers were made so I imagine they're going for that flavor with the flour and not be like a cracker

  2. I agree that there's nothing really special about this bar. I mean, it's a decent bar. There's just no wow factor to it. I actually tasted fig in it. For me, that's what I mainly tasted.

  3. It figures, I sort of like them, but I am told I am like a big kid sometimes, so that might be why.

Also wanted to say I have some trouble with reading this site using feedly on the kindle fire. I just thought you would like to know, but I am not sure there is anything you can do about it!
