Review: Walden Farms Raspberry Fruit Spread

I've done several reviews of Walden Farms fruit spreads here on the blog and since they have multiple flavors for me to try out, I'm now led to give this Walden Farms Raspberry Fruit Spread a try and convey my feelings to you.  I picked this twelve ounce jar up online on Amazon.com via the VitaCost.com store for $4.49.  As with all Walden Farms products, it's zero calories, zero sugar and is flavored with Splenda to replace the sugar.

Visually, this looks just like all the other fruit spreads.  It's jiggly like a gelatin and is colored to resemble the fruit that is supposed to be emulating.  In this case, since raspberry is the fruit of choice, the spread has a slightly darker tint to it than the typical fire engine read color of the Strawberry Fruit Spread.  Outside of that, it has a faint raspberry smell, but it's not all that strong.  Since this is purely a product of science, there are no raspberry bits or any other sort of add-ins that would help you ascertain the raspberry-ness of this other than its color.

In terms of taste, it has a faint raspberry taste as well.  It's not overpowering, but you can definitely tell it is raspberry as it has the combination of tang and sweetness that you'd expect from your typical raspberry and also your typical raspberry jam/jelly that you may use on your toast.  Since it is missing that raspberry bit component in its texture, you really are just eating a raspberry flavored gelatin.  It's not bad, but it's pretty pedestrian.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Despite the fact that this is overwhelmingly a pedestrian flavor and not all that exciting, I've got to give it a BUY IT rating.  It's a nice change of pace and a reasonable approximation of raspberry flavor if you are looking to mix up your flavors of fruit spreads.  Plus, the fact that it is zero calories certainly helps as well as this is the definition of a diet food which means that they one time you'd eat it is if you were on a diet and looking to cut calories.  It's not high on my list of favorites for the Walden Farms fruit spreads, but it is very serviceable.
