Review: New Orleans Ice Cream Company Satsuma Dreamsicle Ice Cream

Dubba got his review up this morning and I'm a big copycat, so here we are with another New Orleans Ice Cream Company review from the incredibly generous shipment of free ice cream they sent me.  This time, it's a flavor that I have no idea what it is coming into it because it has such an odd name and a certifiably wacky container design in the New Orleans Ice Cream Company Satsuma Dreamsicle Ice Cream. What is a satsuma?  Well, it's apparently the Crescent City's favorite citrus fruit.  That still doesn't help, so a perusal of the old Wikipedia tells me that it's a kind of orange.  Okay, that makes sense.  With that, this pint contains four half-cup servings of ice cream and each serving is 150 calories, so this one is a pretty low calorie treat.

Now that we know what a satsuma is, what exactly is a Satsuma Dreamsicle?  Well, it's vanilla bean ice cream mixed with a swirl of satsuma (orange).  As you can see from the picture above, that is definitely the case.  The swirl of satsuma itself permeated strongly of orange/citrus and had an almost jelly-like texture.  The vanilla bean ice cream had small flecks of vanilla bean spread through, but it was mostly just a typical ice cream.  Outside of those two things, there's nothing else going on here.

The visual appearance pretty much describes this one, so this is definitely one that you could eat with your eyes and be fine.  The vanilla bean ice cream was pretty much as you'd expect it to be, although the flavoring of the vanilla wasn't all that strong.  The satsuma swirl was very orange and citrus like in its fairly strong taste, but the jelly-like texture made it kind of odd when mixed with the vanilla bean ice cream.  All in all, that's about all there is to say there.  The only other thing that I can think of to say is that this ice cream itself reminded me of one of those orange sherbet push pop type things that we used to have in my freezer all the time when I was a kid...that's how close the flavor was.  Don't know if they still make those or if anyone knows what I'm talking about, but that's the best comparison I can come up with.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Despite the fact that there was nothing wrong here, I have to give it a FLY BY IT rating solely because I was so entirely bored by this that I didn't feel like eating.  When I typically get a pint ice cream, I usually have to stop my self from devouring it all in one sitting, but in the case of this one, I was so bored by it that it took several sittings before I finished it.  You may find this one fun yourself, but I know that I certainly did not.

FLY BY IT!!
