Review: New Orleans Ice Cream Company Mississippi Debris Ice Cream

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream (obviously I do since this is my second ice cream review today)!  Well, Dubba at On Second Scoop screams for ice cream quite a bit and thanks to his generosity (and also that of New Orleans Ice Cream Company), he recommended that myself and a few other bloggers get free pints of some of the New Orleans Ice Cream Company offerings.  Due to their extreme generosity, I received SEVEN pints of ice cream, so you'll be seeing review of all seven here on the blog as we go through time.  First, I'll start with a pint of the New Orleans Ice Cream Company Mississippi Debris Ice Cream.  One thing that I found amazing about this was that it is only 120 calories per serving for premium ice cream!  That's right, I didn't stutter...ONLY 120 calories per serving (four half-cup servings in a pint).  I was shell shocked by that and even though I was already eager to dive into this to give it a try, that fact itself made me ten times (give or take) more eager.

When I took a look at the lid and saw what all this pint entailed, my utter disbelief at only 120 calories per serving just grew.  In this pint, there is a base of chocolate ice cream with mix-ins including fudge brownie pieces, chocolate flakes, truffles, malt balls, chocolate almonds, cherry liquor cups, marshmallows and all of that is encapsulated by a fudge swirl.  WOW.  Not only is that a lot of ingredients, but say that ten times fast!  Anyway, reading all these ingredients reminded me of Ben & Jerry's Everything But The... flavor ice cream.  Anyway, as you can see in the picture, there are so many add-ins that not all of them could make the cut without me cutting the pint of ice cream in half like I've seen on other blogs, but I'm too lazy to do that.  Instead, you'll just have to take my word for it that there were a lot of these add-ins spread everywhere and the "swirl" of chocolate fudge was one of the thickest swirls that I've ever seen.  Being that add-ins are my bread and butter as it regards to ice cream, so to speak, I was salivating as I dove into this pint.

I had two thoughts about this pint after my first spoonful.  First, this was the creamiest, richest and thickest chocolate flavored ice cream that I think I've ever eaten and second was that this was incredibly sweet.  In fact, with all the chocolate and the chocolate add-ins, I would even venture so far as to say it was too sweet.  Don't get me wrong, I enjoy sweet things and I enjoyed this chocolate sweetness a lot, but I would guess that I could only eat a bit of this at a time without being overwhelmed.  As for the plethora of add-ins, well they added beautiful textural difference to each spoonful as I made my way through.  The malt balls added a nice airy crunch, the almonds, flakes, truffles and cherry cups added a nice solid crunch and the marshmallows added a nice chew.  The fudge also added a nice gooey component to everything as well.  Outside of how they chewed and felt in my mouth, I can't really tell you how each of them actually tasted because all I tasted the entire time while eating all of this "debris" (catch the funny play on words with the name of the product?) was chocolate.  That's not a bad thing, it's just that it was all chocolate, all the time.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Despite the fact that I said it was too sweet and that it lacked flavor differences from the basic chocolate flavoring, there is nothing wrong with that and I give this a BUY IT rating.  Frankly, this is a chocolate lover's delight and if you needed somewhere to find your chocolate fix, you'd feel as if you were in heaven eating this one.  This was a good start for the New Orleans Ice Cream Company and now I'm anxious to try out some of the other flavors!

BUY IT!!

  2. Dug into this one a few nights ago. I was certain that I had a pint with a typo when I saw 120 calories. I'm still not convinced it isn't, but if it truly is only 120 calories, this is hands down the best bang for your buck out there.

  3. This was probably the ice cream I was most curious about. I'm happy that the cherry liquor cups didn't over power with any alcohol flavor. Though that 120 has to be a typo, not many plain light ice cream even reach those nutritionals=p
