Review: Edy's (Dreyer's) Slow Churned Nestle Drumstick Sundae Cone Light Ice Cream

In my previous Edy's review, I explained the difference between why these are referred to as Edy's products in some areas and Dreyer's products in other areas, so I'll just spare you the boredom on that again and get right down to the business of reviewing this product after I get through these quick product details.  I picked this Edy's Slow Churned Nestle Drumstick Sundae Cone Light Ice Cream up at Kroger on sale for $2.99 for a 1.5 quart container.  Each container has about twelve half-cup servings and each serving comes in at around 120 calories.

If you've ever had a Nestle Drumstick (Edy's/Dreyer's is owned by Nestle, by the way, so it's good cross-promotion), you basically can figure out what this is going to consist of.  It's vanilla light ice cream (half the fat and one-third less calories) with chocolate coated chunks of waffle cone along with an additional chocolate swirl.  I wish I could say that that all of that was spread plentifully throughout the container, but sadly, all the add-ins were concentrated in essentially what was a column drive through the middle of the container and spanning from top to bottom.  If you want to spread the mix-ins, you had to do it on your own.  Boo!

Once I was able to spread around some of the add-ins, which took some work since ice cream is of course frozen, I was able to get spoonfuls of both components and it tasted pretty much like I expected.  Despite the fact that it was light ice cream, it had a semi-creamy texture and a nice vanilla taste.  The Drumstick pieces add a nice chocolatey and sweet crunch to the tame vanilla and when they worked together, they provided a nice, balanced treat.

Buy It or Fly By It?  There's nothing overwhelmingly great about this, but Nestle successfully took the normal frozen cone treat and translated it into a container of ice cream.  Sure, I wish there were more add-ins, but beggars can't be choosers and if you are looking for a tasty, but not great, treat, this fits the bill and gets a BUY IT rating.  If you want something a bit more catchy, you'd be best served to try something else, but if you want safe, this could be your choice.

BUY IT!!

  1. Did you even eat this ice cream? It looks like you just looked at the picture and went from there. If you were to look at the ingredients you would've saw that there was also chocolate covered peanuts in there as well. Which I'm guessing you just thought were part of the waffle cone pieces which actually makes no sense since they taste nothing alike. The peanuts are actually ahead of the waffle pieces in the ingredient list so you should've been able to tell the two apart. There's also non dipped waffle cone pieces as well in there so I don't see how you couldn't pick up on them either.

    1. Based on the picture, I think it's pretty obvious that I ate the ice cream. As for the peanuts and waffle cone pieces, I couldn't differentiate between the two and it just tasted like a lot of crunch to me. I still liked this flavor though.
