Review: Turkey Hill Limited Edition Chunky Peanut Butter Ice Cream

It's been a while since I've done a Turkey Hill review on the blog.  In those two reviews that I had done, I discovered one that might be one of my favorite ice creams ever in the Whoopie Pie Ice Cream and was that was just flat out boring in the Snyder's Chocolate Pretzel Light Ice Cream.  Because it had been so long since I had done a Turkey Hill review, I picked up a couple of containers on sale at my local Kroger and that leads me to this first review of a limited time offering with this review of the Turkey Hill Limited Edition Chunky Peanut Butter Ice Cream.  Like I said, this one was on sale for $2.99 and it contains roughly twelve half cup servings at 180 calories per serving.  I love peanut butter more than the typical human being, so I was extremely anxious to dive into this one.

Before I dove in, it was worth exploring how this one was constructed and as you can see, this is "Vanilla flavored ice cream swirled with praline peanuts and chunky peanut butter."  Well, I can confirm all of that is there, although praline peanuts is kind of confusing to me.  I'll take their word for it though, although I can confirm that the peanuts were there and they were healthily spread throughout the container, but not overly abundant.  The strange about this though was the chunky peanut butter swirl.  I would have expected it to have some malleability and give, but it was in fact rock hard and if you dug your spoon into it, it kind of snapped like it was peanut brittle or something like that.  Weird.

Weirdness of the peanut butter "brittle" aside, I was ridiculously anxious and excited to dive in and once I did dive in, my excitement disippated quickly, because this was not all that spectacular.  The praline peanuts added a nice sweet crunch to each spoonful when you encountered them, but they weren't particularly awesome or anything like that.  The vanilla ice cream was fine and when you think about those two components, this was just an average container of ice cream at best.  The one thing that could have saved this (or ruined it) was the peanut butter swirl and frankly, it didn't save anything.  The fact that it was so solid and brittle-like ruined any chance this had of saving the entire container because had it been gooey, it would have perfectly complimented the chunky peanuts.  Instead, the fact that it was rock hard and broke up easily ruined it because it was just like having a waffle cone jammed into the container in that it added crunch, but didn't do much else because the hearty flavor wasn't particularly well spread and that was a world class disappointment.

Buy It or Fly By It?  As much as it pains me to say this, I have to give this a FLY BY IT rating despite the fact that it revolves around one of my favorite foods in the world in peanut butter.  The peanut butter flavoring is just too basic and boring and there's nothing that makes me want to anxiously dive into this container and/or crave it when it isn't anywhere near by me like I do when I think of Turkey Hill's Whoopie Pie Ice Cream.  Oh well, they can't all be game changers and this one definitely is not, although I did have it built up that way in my mind prior to eating it.

FLY BY IT!!

  1. I love the TH chocolate peanut butter cup version , but that peanut butter swirl is hard too. It's my my favorite ice cream that has peanut butter in it. I wasn't a huge fan of the chunky version either but not for the same reasons as u. I loved the ribbon, but wasn't a huge fan of vanilla and peanut butter.

  2. Maybe TH set their own standards too high with Whoopie Pie. Sad this wasn't better!

  3. I agree with anon on the chocolate peanut butter cup variety. I've actually been looking for this to review for on second scoop because of the whole chunky peanut butter swirl. Too bad it was a bust, I guess I don't need to look anymore.

  4. While I have never tried a TH product...it is scary how a company can have one product that is AMAZING and then another product/flavor that leaves you wanting a refund.

    1. I didn't necessarily want a refund as this wasn't horrible. It was just okay, but not okay enough for me to recommend to others to buy.

    2. Oh. That is good that it was not 'refund-worthy'...I have had some energy bar flavors from quality brands that surprised me at how bat they were...and there are even a few Honey Bunches of Oats flavors of cereal that REALLY disappointed me.
