Review: CLIF Chocolate Almond Fudge Bar

The other day, I was meandering through my office trying to waste time before it was time to go home for the day and my travels took me into the lunch room.  In there was a large plate of homemade chocolate and white chocolate fudge.  It's been a while since I've had a piece of fudge, but I know that I love it.  Luckily (for my waistline), I was able to stay away and not have any which I consider to be an accomplishment since I have a major weakness for white chocolate.  Anyway, needing a light lunch a couple days later while working from home, I saw this CLIF Chocolate Almond Fudge bar in my stock of bars and decided to fill my fudge craving in a "healthy" way.  Prior to finding this one in my stock I picked it up at Meijer for $1.09 and it comes it at the CLIF standard 2.4 ounces.  It also is contains 240 calories and ten grams of protein.

Opening the package, you can tell by the coloring that CLIF takes the fudge part of this name seriously as the CLIF Pro mix (oats, soybeans and 70% organic) is a bit darker than usual.  Also in the mix are some chocolate chips and some fairly large and well spread almonds.  All in all, they are delivering on exactly what they promised in the name and considering how some bars fail in doing this, I would consider this an accomplishment.

As I bit into this, I could definitely taste fudge.  It wasn't overpowering, but it was dense and heavy-tasting like you'd expect from a fudge square.  One thing I did find interesting about the taste of this fudge though was that it had an almost coffee-like aftertaste.  It wasn't appalling or unappealing, but it was odd and unexpected.  If you really don't like coffee, this may be a turn-off for you.  As for the almonds, their crunch kind of got lost in the oat mix and the oats provided the chewy texture of this bar and that's about it.  Since almonds rarely have overpowering taste unless eaten on their own, crunch is usually all they have going for them and in this instance, they failed.

Buy It or Fly By It?  BUY IT.  I've done a lot of CLIF reviews and while this isn't their best offering, but it certainly isn't its worst.  Despite the failure of the almond crunch, there's really nothing wrong with this bar and if you have a chocolate/fudge craving, this might help you squelch that craving for a bit.  It did for me.

BUY IT!!

  2. I find it has a distinct taste not of coffee, but rather of sour mash whiskey. I can't figure out why. It's not awful, per se, but certainly not something I was looking for in a snack bar.
