Review: MorningStar Farms Spicy Black Bean Veggie Burgers

I think I mentioned in a previous post that I bought a lot of these MorningStar Farms products all at the same time due to a triple coupon event at my local Marsh, so this review of the Spicy Black Bean Veggie burgers is one of the many that I've done or plan on doing.  These "burgers" come in a box of four patties with two patties to an individually wrapped package within the box.  I guess MorningStar Farms feels that you should be eating two of these at once and being that they are 2.36 ounces and 120 calories per patty, that's not necessarily a bad thought.  With the coupon, I picked these up for $3.00.

I know you can't really tell from the picture above, but each patty is made up of quite a few ingredients to create the veggie blend.  There's obviously black beans in there, but the mix also includes corn, tomatoes, rice, onions, green chili peppers and jalapeno peppers, among the usual laundry list of man-made chemicals. MorningStar Farms says that you can make these in the microwave, oven, skillet or grill, but since I was in a rush, I chose the microwave method.  For future reference, I would recommend the other methods as the microwave can tend to dry these out and make them a bit hard.

Taste-wise, these are pretty solid for a veggie product.  They do have a bit of spice to them as the name would imply and although they are a bit chewy since they are made up of a paste of rice, beans, etc., it is not the kind of chewiness that is unappetizing.  In fact, I would say that overall these are very appetizing and really do avoid the connotation that veggie products get in that they are flavorless and bland.  The spice in these burgers mixed with the myriad of veggies in the mix made this one that I was glad that I had two more patties in the box, because I'll look forward to having these again.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Most of the time I complain about MorningStar Farms products and their costs and say that the taste is not worth the cost, but in this instance, I feel the exact opposite and say BUY IT.  These taste so good (especially when cooked correctly), that the cost doesn't matter in my mind as they put the negative veggie burger myth partially to rest with a darn fine product.  Maybe veggie burgers aren't your thing and that's fine, but if you are willing to give something different a shot and need another Lenten food option, try these.

BUY IT!!

  1. These are delicious (if not a bit greasy. I just blot them with a paper towel a few times before eating), I absolutely love them!
