Review: JELL-O Strawberry Cheesecake Pudding Snack

I've had a lot of previous JELL-O reviews on this blog and as I've said, I'm kind of addicted to their pudding cups.  I mostly try to stick to the the sugar free or Mousse Temptations versions of JELL-O, so I could at least claim that they were "healthy", but I've also done some of the other flavors that do have sugar in them, so that argument kind of goes out the window.  Since I've lost my "healthy" argument with my prior behavior, I might as well drive right into the unhealthy realm with this next review of a full-on dessert and a dessert that resembles one of the most decadent desserts out there, Strawberry Cheesecake.  This one contains 130 calories per four ounce cup and I picked up the package of six cups on sale at Meijer for $2.50.

Looking at this one, it tries hard to resemble its namesake.  It's a cheesecake base with a strawberry jelly-type mixture on top of the cheesecake base (demanding real strawberries in here would be a bit of a stretch).  What amazed me about this as I stirred my spoon through it was that the cheesecake material actually had the consistency of cheesecake as it was creamy and thick.  Totally unexpected, yet also totally welcome.  The strawberry jelly-type mixture was slightly runny and weird, but a guy can't expect the world from a pudding cup, I guess.

So, it did pretty well visually and texturally, but how did it taste?  Honestly, it was pretty darn good and really comparable to an actual cheesecake.  The similar texture of a cheesecake carried over to the taste and mouthfeel of a cheesecake as well.  It was a bit "looser" than your typical cheesecake, but that wasn't really a problem.  It was sweet and decadent and when you are eating a cheesecake, that's definitely what you are looking for.  As for the strawberry mixture, well, it was strange but it didn't really take anything away from the cake.  It actually had a nice little sweet bite to the creaminess of the cheesecake and made for a nice mixture.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Much to my surprise, I have to give this a strong BUY IT rating because of its above average job of resembling an actual cheesecake.  It's not the real thing, obviously, but it is pretty darn close. In all seriousness, the only thing missing from making this a near identical clone was the graham cracker crunch that you usually find in a cheesecake from the crust.  Other than that, you've got it all here.

BUY IT!!

  1. I hate cheesecake, so I don't think I'll be trying this one!

Nice to see that someone else shares my fondness for pudding, though. :)
