I've reviewed CLIF Kid Z Bar products before on the blog and this is another in that series. This time, let's look at the Chocolate Chip version of the Z Bar line. As always, these bars are 95% organic and angled toward kids as a healthy snack bar. I'm an adult (at least I think I am), but that's not important. What is important is that this bar weighs in at 1.27 ounces and contains 130 calories. I picked this one up at Kroger for $0.69.
Visually this one looks pretty similar to all the other Z Bars in its composition. It's primarily made up of the typical oat mix (the oat pieces are clearly visible) and is then interspersed with small chocolate chips. It's got a lighter coloring than the other Z Bars that I've reviewed, but I'm guessing that is due to the fact that the coloring is more supposed to resemble a chocolate chip cookie as opposed to a brownie, for example. The bar is then topped with a chocolate swirl icing to add a nice and "pretty" pattern to what would otherwise be a boring design.
In terms of taste, there is nothing special here, but it is a nice treat. It's pretty much what you'd expect as it tastes of a chewy oat mix with a nice kick of chocolate at the end. In fact, the chewiness makes it somewhat resemble what you'd get from eating a soft chocolate chip cookie. The chocolate is not overly sweet or mild, so it falls somewhere in between. The chocolate chips contribute to this flavor, although there is no detectable crunch that they provide. Other than that, there's not a whole lot to say about this bar. It's a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) bar.
Buy It or Fly By It? BUY IT. It's non-offensive and the flavor is pretty decent. If you are looking for a healthy organic snack with a hint of sweetness for you or your children, then this one is right up that alley (this sound exactly like my other Z Bar reviews, doesn't it?). Don't expect to have your socks knocked off, but do expect a nice appetizing snack and you won't be disappointed.
