I'm sure you'll find this surprising, but I've got another Ben & Jerry's review. Somehow, after all these reviews, I've managed to only put on a few pounds, which I see as a borderline miracle considering how many desserts, protein bars and other crap that I've eaten. That said, next up in what is most likely a never ending quest to try every single Ben & Jerry's flavor (banana flavors not included; I just can't do banana), I'm brought to the Triple Caramel Chunk flavor. A triple dose of caramel flavor! Well, any caramel, much less triple caramel, is enough to pull me in, so I was led to this one like a sheep to slaughter. I picked this one up at Meijer on sale for $3.00 for the pint and each pint contains four servings (yeah right) at 280 calories per serving.
As the label on the pint says, this one is made up of "Caramel Ice Cream with a Swirl of Caramel & Fudge Covered Caramel Chunks." As the picture shows, all of that stuff is there (you can tell the caramel ice cream since it is slightly darker than vanilla ice cream), but not in the quantities as you would like. I tried to get a picture that would show all the components of the pint, but it doesn't exactly show them in the ratios that were spread through the pint. For example, looking at this picture, you would think there were a lot of the fudge covered caramel chunks and that was definitely not the case. There was a semi-decent amount of them, but they were centered more toward the middle of the pint and not the top of the bottom. As for the caramel swirl, well, it was only really in the center of the pint too. Ben & Jerry's did a poor job mixing this one because everything was centralized in the inner half. Boo!
As for the taste, the caramel swirl and fudge covered caramel chunks were about what you'd expect. The swirl was gooey and nice and the chunks were just plain old fudge covered caramel chunks. There was nothing special about them as they weren't overly sweet or overly flavorless. You could tell there was chocolate and caramel involved, but there wasn't anything overpowering about either flavor. The real issue with this one was the supposed caramel ice cream flavor. In my opinion, the caramel flavor in the ice cream was virtually non-existent. Had I eaten this blindfolded, I would have insisted this was vanilla ice cream. The only thing that made me "think" this was caramel and actually look for this flavor was the fact that the ice cream was a slightly darker color. That's it and not very impressive when the only caramel "flavoring" that you have going for you is the color of your ice cream and not the taste. Very poor.
Buy It or Fly By It? Ultimately, this was a boring flavor, so FLY BY IT. Caramel is a favorite of mine, but not even the promise of one of my favorite flavors could get me to try this again. That's too bad because when I looked at the label of this one and the fact that it had triple caramel, I was pretty excited. Ultimately I was let down though and that is not cool.
