Review: CLIF Coconut Chocolate Chip Bar

CLIF has kept me busy on this blog and it's time for the first CLIF Bar review of the week.  This time, it's one of their "new" (at the time of my purchase) flavors, the Coconut Chocolate Chip bar.  I picked this one up for $1.00 at Kroger and it clocks in at 2.4 ounces packing 240 calories and ten grams of protein.  Coconut is a flavor that I disliked for most of my life, but I've recently developed a taste for it and because of that, I was anxious to give this bar a try.

Looking at this one, it doesn't look or feel much different from the typical CLIF bar that I've reviewed on this blog. This dense bar is primarily made up of CLIF's Pro Energy Mix consisting of organic oats, soybeans, etc. and this then mixed with whatever bits of flavor this bar is going for.  It this case, the mix-ins include large coconut bits, which were plentiful, and chocolate chips, which were not plentiful.  One thing I did notice after taking this out of the packaging was the very strong coconut smell and being that it was so strong, that was encouraging for me as I embarked on my coconut adventure.  As for the rest of the bar, it was topped with a squiggly chocolate swirl on top for decoration.

The strong smell of the coconut carried over to the flavor as the coconut taste was powerful as well.  Unfortunately, the chocolate taste was not powerful as I could barely tell it was even included in the bar.  All I could taste in this one was coconut and the taste of the energy mix.  Well, most of what I tasted was the oats in the energy mix as they overpowered the entire bar.  To top that off, the bar had a strange, almost alcohol like aftertaste.  It wasn't particularly strong, but it did add an unpleasant taste to the bar as I worked my way through it.

Buy It or Fly By It?  FLY BY IT.  I desperately wanted to like this bar because I'm developing a liking for coconut flavored products, but I just can't do it with this one.  The flavors in this one just don't mix together well and that's not a good thing.  It's definitely not a bar that I would actively seek out again.

FLY BY IT!!

  1. Your review of this surprises me! I love this bar - prob one of my faves. I think it tastes like a Girl Scout Samoa, in flavor and texture. I feel almost like I'm being bad on my diet when I eat this.

  2. I think it is great too. Especially because I can't stand the peanut butter flavored one.

  3. I got to your site by typing in "Coconut chocolate chip Clif bar tastes like alcohol?"... At first I thought it tasted like a Samoa, but that alcohol aftertaste ruins it. :(

  6. Yep. Got here by Googling "Clif Bar tastes like liquor". A fine bourbon aftertaste. I need to find a cigar to compliment my protein bar. LOL!
