Review: Kellogg's Special K Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Meal Bar

I'll be the first to admit that I approached reviewing this bar with some apprehension.  Kellogg's and by extension, Special K, are mostly a breakfast cereal company so I was a little concerned when I saw that they were going into the protein/meal replacement bar market.  I guess you could use this to replace your breakfast or something like that, but it seemed kind of odd that they wanted to dip their toe in the water with Pure Protein, MET-Rx, etc. (the bars were in the same part of Meijer as those bars; got it for $1.09 by the way).  Even with that, I was still willing to give this Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor a shot in the name of public education!  This one clocks in at a semi-respectable 1.59 ounces with 180 calories and ten grams of protein.  It's a pedestrian flavor combination, but hey, it's a good one that often works.

As you can see, this one looks just like any Zone Perfect bar or any variety of protein bars, so if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Special K is proving itself to be the easiest girl at the dance.  The interior texture is Rice Krispie-treat like and the exterior is coated in a layer of chocolate.  So, there are no surprises there.  One thing that was surprising was the overpowering scent of peanut butter when I opened this bar.  It's all I smelled and being that I've professed my love of George Washington Carver's invention here many times before, I was very happy with that.

In terms of taste, this was exactly what you'd expect...it was peanut butter and chocolate.  The peanut butter taste was quite strong like the smell and that was nice.  The chocolate, while not overpowering like the peanut butter, was a semi-sweet compliment.  All of this was rolled together in a bar that had a distinctly crunchy texture due to the Rice Krispie-like interior.  All in all, it was nothing earth shattering, but it was a nice little package.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Given my pre-review feelings, it completely surprises me to give this one a BUY IT rating.  It was really good, although I wish it had been larger because it left me wanting more at the end.  If you end up seeing this one at the store and are feeling like an old standby of peanut butter and chocolate, you can definitely not go wrong with this one.

BUY IT!!

  1. I wanted to try the protein stuff from Special K but there is so much sugar! Like the protein shakes I think had like 18 grams of sugar, I was like, uh...no thanks, Ill go eat some eggs. If this one's not loaded with the sweet stuff, which it probably is, I might give it a try :)
