Review: JELL-O Sugar Free Dulce De Leche Pudding

Next up in my review series of JELL-O's Sugar Free pudding cups is the Dulce De Leche flavor (just like the Boston Cream Pie flavor, there's no official website).  These cups come in a six pack as you see above and are four ounces at sixty calories per cup.  I picked this one up at Meijer on sale for $2.50.  I will admit that I've had this before, but like I did with the Boston Cream Pie review, I will approach this as if this was the first time I've had it.

Texture wise, this one is constructed a lot like the Boston Cream Pie flavor of the pudding.  The bottom layer is a thick and creamy vanilla base.  The second layer is a thinner caramel base that seeps slightly down into the creamy vanilla base and this is the "Dulce De Leche" portion of the pudding.  Basically, this topping is the simulation of the sweetened and caramelized milk in the classic dulce de leche recipe.

In my first spoonful, I tried to get both the vanilla base and the dulce de leche into the same spoonful.  Being that I'm very coordinated and dextrous, I was happily able to do this.  Hooray for me!  Anyway, taking a bite into this thing was like taking a bite into heaven.  The base was creamy, bordering on heavy, and the dulce de leche was infused with a very strong caramel flavor.  A continuing theme on this blog is my love of all things caramel, so I was a big fan of this caramel flavoring.  When you stir the base and the caramel flavor together a bit, you get a nice mix of sweet and thick.  It's truly wonderful.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Clearly BUY IT.  Honestly, this and Boston Cream Pie are my two favorite flavors of all the JELL-O sugar free pudding flavors that I have had (there are others I've never had) and I love it whenever I have them in the house.  I'm not sure which one to rank higher because it depends on the day, but these two are my go-to pudding cups.  It pains me when they aren't on sale, but when they are, I load up my cart like I'm stocking a storm shelter which I'm sure is amusing to people at the store as they seem some goof rolling down the aisles with a cart that is 75% filled with pudding.  LOL, I'm a regular Billy Madison.

BUY IT!!

  1. That was "Punch Drunk Love", not "Happy Gilmore". :)

I'll have to give this one a try... I like pudding, although I haven't had this flavor.

    1. Actually, we were both wrong. Looking back, I was thinking about Billy Madison and his love of Hunt's Snack Packs. I've got to edit that in the post now. Thanks for correcting me though! I can't believe I screwed that up!

  2. I was out shopping today and spotted new varieties of jello pudding. The one that caught my eye most was the smores flavor. I didn't really examine it but I'm curious as to how they will get the graham cracker part involved.

  3. I stock up on these too! They are amazingly delicious. I actually mix in a pinch of salt into the dulce de leche layer to make a salted caramel pudding. Sounds weird but trust me, it's yum!

  4. What do you all think of the new 4 pack of Jello Puddings? I feel its a definite rip-off! I've been buying these for years. Usual price at my market is $3.49 to $3.99 for the six pack. Well all the 6's are gone now and they've stocked up with this 4 pack at $2.99. That brings the price of these puddings from .58 cents each for the 6 pack to a whopping .74 cents each for the 4 pack. I'm refusing to buy them and will go on to other puddings or back to making my own. I wrote to Kraft...needless to say I've yet to get an answer but I'm sure they feel they can placate me with a coupon! No way!

    1. I heard that was coming but had not seen it yet. At those prices, I probably won't buy anymore and that makes me sad. I guess the four packs are a way to compete with the Hunt's Snack Packs, which come in four packs. JELL-O had a good thing going...now they are just like everyone else. Lame.

    1. I know it is still being made because I see it in my stores locally in the Indianapolis area every time I'm there. Don't know why you are in a Dulce De Leche dead zone though. Seems odd.
